Researching the Official Information Act Site- I found an OIA Request from a S E Shaw to NZDF (NZ Defence Force) SE Shaw referenced the Burnham Military Camp Training documents for Junior Non-Commissioned Officer Courses (JNCO) 2025 – Painting- Framing the Enemy as Christians that have Traditional Values seen as the Enemy- Violent Extremist on an Island resembling the South Island of NZ. His OIA Request included a number of questions (awaiting response from NZDF)
The questions were:- (1) How widely is this ‘General Idea’ (The Enemy scenario being Christians with Traditional Values) (2) How- Whom developed the Christians that Defend their Faith. Christians that are Violent Extremists. Christians with Traditional Values are the Adversary (Enemy)? (3) Who approved it and who developed it? And why is it different from previous Enemy Scenarios used by the NZDF?
The US ‘ DATE-P’ & USA DATE Indo-Pacific Standard Training Program, that’s been used by the NZDF since 2023..Shortly after the US established it. This Simulated Exercise uses Imaginary Countries/Regions as the Adversary Enemy. Which refers to the potential cause of ‘ Moral Injury’ and ‘Cognitive Dissonance’ being – particularly when soldiers belong to a Faith Group (Identify with Christian Adversaries ). Training conflicts with their personal morals (ethical or religious conviction). This being a form of Psychological Harm. Simulation Training Exercises often use dehumanizing tactics. Making the enemy nameless or employing specific stereotypes to create a sense of ‘Otherness’.
Psychological harm can occur when an individual violates their own deeply held moral beliefs. The Enemy ‘Definition Crisis ‘. If a simulation Training Exercises may force a Christian Soldier to fight Christian adversary (Enemy) . Challenging Good vs Evil. Causing to question the justification of the conflict. The potential for increased distress
Studies indicate that while Religious Beliefs can provide Resilience.. A conflict can contradict those beliefs such as fighting a fellow believer of the Christian Faith can trigger a negative inability to cope leading to PTSD Symptoms. Disrupt cognitive, moral, spiritual frameset, potentially causing emotional mental ethical distress rather than that of effective training. This impact often manifests in Cognitive Dissonance (Moral Injury).
Moral Injury results when Military Personal are exposed to Moral Injurious events.. that conflict with their values and beliefs Self Identity Lost and Found . Moral Injury/Cognitive Dissonance . The Human Spirit is the Essential Core of Individuals. The Deepest part of Self. (More than characteristics & roles associated with ones identity. The Human Spirit is a motivating force directed towards realizing higher orders * goals * aspirations that grow out of the essential self.
When exposed to a Persons Core Self, ideals * perceptions of reality can be shattered and their Spirit broken, leaving them spiritually and existentially struggling. Moral Injury/Cognitive Dissonance is a form of Spiritual Christian Religious Struggle associated with Depressive Symptoms that impact on psychological wellbeing /health. May cause distress, increased mental health symptoms and a greater risk of mortality (Disconnection from others) That impacts on Population- Society -Public Distrust.
The use of specific Religious Groups in military (Training Exercises). Where Christians are the Adversary Enemy. The Military framing of Religious Faith Identity influencing broader cultural narratives that may potentially causing societal conflict- – Disunity and Violence within population attitudes. My research into psychological harm. Moral Injury / Cognitive Dissonance defines that Military Training Exercises may cause Psychological Stress. When contradictory Beliefs/Values (Such as Traditional Values) become significantly heightened when Military Training scenarios portray the enemy as Christians holding Traditional Christian Values. This scenario creating direct conflict between a soldiers deeply held personal religious faith and traditional values as a Christian
The Military objective views the opposite, thus potentially leading to Severe Mental Distress. Reduced Combat Readiness (which puts them also at risk -in harms way). Reduces Combat effectiveness. Causing Moral Injury/Cognitive Dissonance. Attributing to fictional enemies in Military Training Programs. The internalizing Moral framework that creates an unresolved Cognitive Dissonance which can potentially cause severe PTSD. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). This can lead to Hypocrisy-Shame-Blame-Guilt – A Loss of Moral Identity (Particularly in Western Militaries)

OIA Request from John Armstrong to NZ Transport Agency dated (18/1/2026) requesting a response from NZTA as to the reasons why the Destiny Church Protest-Pre-planned march over the Auckland Harbour Bridge 31st January 2026 was not permitted for Safety reasons. John Armstrong sought responses to various import questions out of strong Public Interest and reasons of transparency where restrictions are placed on ‘Freedom Of Speech & Peaceful Assembly. Questioning whether the restrictions were evidence based & applied consistently. (NZTA notified John Armstrong they would respond to his OIA on or before 16th February 2026)
Its questionable whether there is a bone of contention in not permitting Destiny Church Protest to cross the Harbour Bridge. Christian people with Traditional Values. Over the last 5 years Brian Tamaki’s Destiny Church has been targeted by NZ Police- Central & Local Govt * Academia * NGO’s *LGBTQ1 + * Pro Palestine Protestors etc., Obviously Destiny Church is seen as the Adversary Christian Enemy. ( Once again an ideological conflict with Christian People defending Traditional Values).
However, later that day to keep peace, the Police & Maori Wardens accompanied the Protestors over the Bridge (Under Duress) (News Article Te Ao Maori News 26/2/2022). Although eventually allowed to cross the Bridge it was obvious Destiny Church had become the Adversary Christian Enemy.
A number of events over the years have taken place which have included crossing the Auckland Harbour Bridge without safety warnings or restrictions:- For instance the large ‘One Ocean’ protest convoy of approximately 500 vehicles and boats (November 22nd) travelled across the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Mission Bay,. Also the ‘Walk It-Wheel It across Auckland Harbour Bridge events, supported by Auckland City Council in 2023 over a 5 day period. 60,000 Aucklanders were reported to having the chance to take part (12, 19, 26th March & 2nd April 2023)
