It has been documented many times that to really understand what its like for others, we must first walk in their shoes. That’s impossible, we can listen with our hearts and ears, see with our eyes and be empathetic, caring in heart and spirit.

There is one other component of empathy. I’ve not yet said anything about imagination. This is important because we may need to empathise with people whom we have no direct contact. The historian Benedict Anderson, in his work on nationalism, famously referred to the modern nation-state as an imagined community.
