The Labour Govt was elected in 1935. They quickly tried to diversify International trade. At the end of 1936 the Finance Minister Walter Nash travelled to London. He failed at convincing Britains Politicians and Bankers into accepting new trade deals with New Zealand, so he made an unscheduled visit to Germany, where he was made most welcome by Hitlers Regime . Nash and his Nazi counterparts struck a trade deal * by the end of 1937 NZ was exporting 500 tonnes of Butter and large amounts of wool to Nazi Germany

Back in NZ the Trade Deal was welcomed with much delight. Mark Fagan the leader of the Legislative Council, the Upper House of Parliament said that the agreement had “already brought about a better understanding between New Zealand and Germany” and thanked Walter Hellenthal for his efforts to improve relations between NZ and Nazi Germany.

July 1937 the Trade Agreement was finalized by the Minister of Labour Tim Armstrong whom had toured Germany, visiting factories, talking with leaders of Germanys trade unions, Armstrong reporting that the German peopled appear to be very contented under Hitlers rule. Finance Minister Walter Nash and his wife departed NZ for London in 1936 where his proposals for Trade deals were rejected. Walter Nash was also the Minister for Customs as well as Finance in the late 1930’s. He had the responsibility for assessing applications for would be immigrants to New Zealand

Walter Nash was minister of customs as well as minister of finance in the late 1930s, and it was the Ministry of Customs that had responsibility for assessing applications by would-be immigrants to New Zealand. Nash’s Policy 1939 replying to a letter to NZs quakers who wanted the country to accept more Jewish refugees.. Nash claimed that “there is a major difficulty in absorbing these people in our cultural life”

However NZ Immigration Policy had long valued assimilation. British were preferred as migrants because it was said they blended into NZ Society better than other groups. But Nash found it harder to assimilate the Jewish people into NZ than other peoples from Europe. Since the 19th century Jewish people had been important to NZs political, commercial and cultural life. For example  Julius Vogel was a practicing Jew, but he became the Premier of the Colony in 1873.

Haldenstein, Myers and Nathan families built business empires. Thus Nash’s claim that he found it hard to accept Jews into NZ is dubious we have to wonder whether there was another reason (Its questionable). Was he fearful that is he welcomed too many Jewish refugees this may antagonize the Nazi Regime  and imperil their trade deal.?

Then Nash left the processing of applications for immigration permits to senior officials at the Ministry Of Customs. This was managed by Edwin Good, he held the position until his retirement in 1946. In 1939 he wrote a memo for Ministry Staff in which he stated that “Non-Jewish Applicants are regarded as a more suitable type of Migrant”

The Evening Post in 1938 published a tribute to Walter Hellenthal who was taking leave of absence from his post in NZ. The article described the “ many luncheons, dinner parties, cocktail parties that the Wellington German Club had organized to make Hellethals stay in the city welcome. The Evening Post listed the hosts of these parties. Edwin Good appeared on its list. Good was involved in the German Club, an organization saturated with Nazism and Antisemitism. Therefore its surely questionable that he may have had personal, ideological reasons for keeping Jewish people out of New Zealand?

When the Jewish refugees reached NZ it did not end there, 1939 Jewish refugees were often considered potential or actual agents of the enemy. The same Jews whom, had been earmarked for execution (extermination) by the Nazi’s were suddenly suspected of being Nazi Sympathisers

During the war years Jews also came under pressure from professional groups, who worried about competition from highly skilled migrants. The New Zealand sections of the British Medical Association campaigned against refugee doctors, arguing that they should not be allowed to practise here. In response, the government made it compulsory for refugee doctors to do no less than three years of “training” at the Otago Medical School.

The Returned Services Association repeatedly called for the mass, indiscriminate internment of all “enemy aliens”, and claimed that they were taking jobs that should be kept for soldiers serving abroad.

In June 1945, when the war had been over for only a few weeks, and images of Nazi death camps like Auschwitz and Dachau were shocking the rest of the world, a national conference of the RSA called for the deportation of all “enemy aliens” who had arrived in New Zealand from 1939, and for the confiscation of any wealth they had acquired during their time in the country. The RSA’s demand would have forced Eva Brent and many other Jews to return to a divided, hungry and ruined Germany.

A number of newspapers supported the RSA. The Dominion argued that the refugees had been “given shelter during a storm”; now that the storm was over, they should “go home”.

YOUNG EVA BRENT WAS ONE OF THE FEW JEWISH REFUGEE’S ALLOWED TO MIGRATE TO NZ: Jewish people that was desperate to enter NZ  to escape Nazi persecution. In 1938 she was just a young women living in Berlin. Nazi mobs were setting alight Jewish Synagogues, looting Jewish owned stores. 1939 EVA BRENT’S MOTHER AND FATHER WERE NOT ACCEPTED IN NZ: Sadly she had to leave her Mother & Father behind. They were eventually murdered by the Nazi’s.  In 1988 Ann Beaglehole published an important book about the experiences of Eva Brent and other Jewish Refugees in NZ. In an appendix to her book she reproduced two form letters used by NZ Civil Servants.

THE FIRST LETTER: Was sent to Jewish and  Czech Europeans who had enquired about migrating to New Zealand.

THE SECOND LETTER: Was sent to other Europeans whom made the same inquiry

THE LETTER AIMED AT THE JEWISH PEOPLE: Used a much harsher language (text) Stating that Immigration Permits would be issued only in certain types of special cases. Without explaining what those special cases are. (entailed)..1,100 Jewish refugees were accepted but many,  many more were rejected ( I personally question:-Eem was this because of the trade deal that the NZ Labour led government had with Nazi Germany?. Was this about the conspiracy theories that were wildly spreading around the world about the Jews?  Was it that there were those that embraced Hitlers Regime. ?)

SOME COUNTRIES WERE MUCH MORE GENEROUS TO THE JEWS:  The Dominican Republic, which is less than a fifth of the size of New Zealand, accepted 30,000 Jewish refugees from Hitler. Switzerland, which is even smaller, also took 30,000. Fifty thousand Jews found refuge in the tiny international zone of the city of Shanghai.

THESE CONSPIRACY THEORIES ORIGINATED FROM SEVERAL SOURCES that are largely related to the  The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion, a fabricated document alleging a Jewish Plot for World Domination, which has been proven many times to be plagiarism based on forgery by ‘The Times News’ London in 1921. Reporting and investigations by the New York Herald proved these were fabrications-conspiracy theories

SPECIFIC NEWSPAPERS AND REPORTS :-

THE TIMES (LONDON) AUGUST 1921:. Correspondent for the Times Philip Graves published a series of articles (The Truth about The Protocols: A Literary Forgery) proving that the Protocols were largely plagiarized from Maurice Jolys 1864 French Political satire ‘ Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu’ The original work did not even mention the Jews at all but it was made to believe it was.

NEW YORK HERALD 1921: Reporter Herman Bernstein published a book titled “The History Of A Lie: The Protocols Of The Three Wise Men Of Zion”. Which exposed the document as a cruel and terrible lie for an American audience.

HENRY FORD’ THE DEARBORN INDEPENDENT : The New York Times 1920-1921 wrote an article about Henry Fords owned newspaper ‘The Dearborn’ which was promoting the forgery.  Pointing out that the Dearborn articles were fraudulent by nature, including a full page spread on September 4^th 1921 titled “Proof That The Jewish Protocols Were Forged

THE SOURCES OF PLAGIARISM: Investigations revealed the text was crafted by Russian Secret Police Agents by mixing parts of Maurice Joly’s  1864 Satire with chapters from Goetsch’s 1868 novel Biarritz  * Later in 1934-1935 a Swiss Court in Bern officially ruled that the Protocols are forgeries and Obscene Literature  *In 1999 a Russian Historian identified the specific Secret Police operative as being Matthieu Golovinski, he is believed to have created the text to demonize Jews and to manipulate Tsar Nicholas 11.

EXPOSURES OF THESE EARLY MAJOR NEWSPAPERS: The conspiracy theories- fake news continues . Despite these early and definitive exposures by major newspapers, the forgery continued to be circulated by anti-Semitic groups throughout the 20th century and into the present day. Spread worldwide and interpreted into at least 23 languages.  And still today these conspiracy theories, fabricated untruths are believed to be true.  Enriches the Propaganda Machine against the Jews.

In 2019 a poll showed that 29% of New Zealanders knew little to nothing about the Holocaust. When they  responded to the question as to whether to holocaust was a myth. A 1/3^rd of those polled either refused to respond or said they were unsure how to answer the question. Only 18% of young New Zealanders said they knew much about the Holocaust

KIWI’S ARE SKEPTICAL: An Associate Professor of History at Victoria University – Giacomo Lichtner wrote an op-on Stuff to explain why he was not surprised by the findings of the poll. He said when he tried to talk to NZrs about the Holocaust he found that often Kwi’s were skeptical about the Holocaust events relevance to their own country. “Eeem – What does it have to do with our country. Afterall New Zealand what have NZrs had to do with the tragedy of the Jews in fascist Europe”

IN 1935 DM RAE PRINCIPAL OF AUCKLAND TEACHERS TRAINING COLLEGE:- Gave a public lecture on the great things he had seen on his pilgrimage to Germany. Rae  said that “Hitler has given hope to the German people”.

IN 1935 REUEL LOCHORE RETURNED TO NZ WITH HIS TOOTHBRUSH LOOK ALIKE HITLER MOUSTACHE:  Reuel Lochore  was a linguist spent the first half of the 1930’s studying in Bonn and Berlin. He was described as wearing a toothbrush moustache like Hitlers. He was interviewed by an Auckland Star News Reporter.  He claimed that “Germany did not exist as a Nation until Hitler took power in 1933”

THE CLEANING UP PROCESS OF HITLERS POLITICAL OPPONENTS:  This was the description given by Lochore as he toured New Zealand viving lectures about the need for rapprochement with the Nazi’s. In one lecture he boasted he had attended a training camp for Nazi Stormtroopers.
